Any endeavor that requires significant preparation includes an "I-am-not-worthy" day. I hope today was the only one for the EC.
I-am-not-worthy days are a mixture of feeling inadequately trained, uncomfortable in whatever gear is involved, focused on possible injuries and, most of all, negative mentally. They make one wont to whine, but instead I'll lift a glass of the last without the "h" and move on.
Friday set a record for rainfall here on February 5--1.37 inches at Raleigh-Durham airport. You can see the results above. That's a floating dock with a fixed bridge leading to it. The lake was full of debris washed down streams and liberated from what normally is way above shoreline.
This presents few problems for kayakers because we don't have motors with shear pins (or at least I haven't found mine yet) or go fast enough to damage hulls. The flotsom arranges itself in patterns that seem to be based on a blend of gravity and wind. Pine needle clusters float point down and develop long, snaking lines. (I did not even attempt to photograph this.)
I spent about 5-1/2 hours on the water, the last 1-1/2 chasing Dawn. (Note capital D; it was not dark.) I was leaving Ebenezer Point when I saw her at the 64 bridge. Considering the aforementioned I-am-not-worthy mindset, I thought company, especially wise company, would be welcome. Suffice to say that it's easier to say to one's self "Don't push too hard" than it is to actually do it.
No, I didn't catch her, but at least I got back to Farrington Point before she left, so I had help hoisting the Mirage onto the roof rack. (It would have been dicey solo.)
Tomorrow morning, it's off to see the orthopaedist. I can feel proud to present him an appropriately abused body to examine.
UPDATE: I've been diagnosed with adhesive capsulitis (aka frozen shoulder), which is very good news considering the other possibility: arthritis. They don't know what causes it, but it's not the paddling. Structurally, my shoulder looks fine in x-ray view. I've been cleared to proceed with the EC; steroid injection is there if I want it, but I think I'll try to get by on ibuprofen.
